TAMPA, Fla. – Didi Gregorius played five rounds of defense and scored two in four goals as he wandered Monday during an extended training in the spring in his first match since Tommy John's surgery on Oct. 17.

"It was good," Gregorius said.

Playing against the Detroit Tigers' minor leagues and ahead of Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, Gregorius scored twice and propelled three players to the ground, but made a mistake during a shot at first goal.

Gregorius has just undergone surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the right elbow. He appears to be about to begin a minor league re-education mission in a week or two and join the Yankees at the end of June.

Gregorius had an eventful first round.

He was instructed to attack a springboard and then made a precise throw before removing the second batter.

After staining a ball from his foot and breaking a bat on a typo, Gregorius made a lap in the lower half. He slipped the first feet in the second goal on a field, then slipped his head to third in a single field.

Gregorius beat .268 with a career high of 27 homers and 86 RBIs last season. He injured his elbow while he was making a throw from the left field after a ball bounced off the green monster from Fenway Park in the second game of the AL Division series in Boston.

Private Giancarlo Stanton was scheduled to begin a rehab mission for Tampa Class A on Monday night. He has not played since March 31 because of a contracted left bicep and then a contracted left shoulder.

Arrested Troy Tulowitzki, dismissed since April 3 by a tense left calf, resumed batting training on the field Monday and continued to take ground shots at the short stop and third base.
