Gregory Polanco in the Pirates’ lineup Monday against Arizona; Michael Chavis called up to play on 2nd base

Amid reports that Gregory Polanco was waived by the Pittsburgh Pirates, manager Derek Shelton said the eight-season veteran would be in the starting lineup on Monday for the start of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

There were reports from several outlets on Sunday night that Polanco was lifted, but other teams have until 1 p.m. Tuesday to claim it.

In addition, Michael Chavis, acquired from the Boston Red Sox by the trade deadline, and outfielder Anthony Alford should be activated in time for Monday’s game. Chavis was in the Indianapolis Triple-A and Alford was taken off the injured list.

Shelton said Chavis is in the lineup on Monday and will play second base. He’ll also play first base and possibly outfield while he’s with the Pirates, Shelton said.

Chavis was hitting .246 with five homers and 12 RBIs in 17 games for Indianapolis. He played for first, second and third and right field.

To make room on the active roster, infielders Rodolfo Castro and Hoy Park were chosen for Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indiananpolis, respectively.
