The El Coffee revolution is over.
By Rob Biertempfel or Athleticism and other sources, the Pirates put outfielder Gregory Polanco on waivers tonight.
To say that Polanco is struggling is an understatement. His current slash line is .199 / 0.278 / .343, and he has the third strikeout rate for the National League outfielder at 26.7%. His defense has also been horrendous all season.
It’s a sad end for the Bucs de Polanco career. He has spent his entire professional career with the Pirates organization, having signed with them in 2009 at the age of 17, and was promising enough to have secured a five-year, $ 35 million contract in 2016. Unfortunately, he didn’t quite measure up. his potential, and he wasn’t the same after a shoulder injury in 2019. It was kind of a given that he would be released after this season, but obviously Ben Cherington decided to move the schedule up.
With over seven years of major league service, Polanco will still owe the guaranteed money on his contract. If no team picks him up by Tuesday, he can choose to be a free agent. Given that neither team seemed interested in him before this year’s trade deadline, this is likely the route he will take.
Once upon a time, Polanco, Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen had to be the Pirates’ dream field. Hopefully, like Marte and Cutch, El Coffee can spread elsewhere.
