POLITICO previously reported that Grenell was preparing for a gubernatorial race in the Deep Blue State, which Trump lost by more than 29 percentage points in 2020. A GOP strategist who discussed Grenell’s plans with him said said he planned to announce a race after the recall effort reached the signing threshold for the ballot.

Grenell told POLITICO that “that’s not true” he had started interviewing potential collaborators and was preparing to announce a race if the effort to get the recall on the ballot was successful, and he was non-binding when asked about a potential race in a Newsmax interview.

“California was once the land of the Reagan. The shining example of business innovation and middle class success, ”Grenell said. “But now when you think of California, you think of wildfires running out of control, power outages, schools still closed, businesses closed.

Newsom has gone on the defensive as the attempt to recall him has gained momentum, staging campaign events as critics criticize him for state restrictions on coronaviruses. The Republican National Committee put hundreds of thousands of dollars into the nomination.

On Saturday, Grenell got the apparent support of Mercedes Schlapp of the American Conservative Union Foundation, who is moderating the next roundtable.

“How wonderful was Ric Grenell? I don’t know, I think he would make a great Governor of California, ”said Schlapp, a former Trump aide and wife of ACU President Matt Schlapp.
