EXCLUSIVE: Two weeks after the death of Andrew DeLuca, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy prepares for the return of another tragically deceased Gray Sloan Memorial doctor, Lexie Gray. Nine years after leaving the show, Chyler Leigh returns. She will be featured in next week’s episode (April 1), reprising her character of Lexie Gray as part of this season’s recurring Dream Beach motif. Lexie and her sister Meredith’s reunion is teased in a promo, which will air at the end of tonight’s episode of the ABC medical drama. UPDATE: You can watch the promo above.
Season 17’s beach theme is the brainchild of executive producer / showrunner Krista Vernoff, presented to bring joy amid the grim realities of the pandemic, as evidenced by Grey’s. Lexie of Leigh follows Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd, who was recurring in the dream sequences, and TR Knight’s George O’Malley, who was featured in a December episode. Separately, another Gray alumnus Sarah Drew, whose character April Kepner is very much alive, is also returning for an appearance this season.

Lexie Gray of Leigh is the younger paternal half-sister of Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo). Her character was introduced at the end of Season 3 when Lexie was transferred to Seattle Grace Hospital as a new surgical intern following her mother’s sudden death and was made a surgical resident in Season 5. The Lexie’s main storyline involved her recurring and recurring relationship. with plastics assisting Mark Sloan, played by Eric Dane. Both died in a plane crash in the Season 8 finale. Seattle Grace Mercy West was later renamed Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital in their memory.
Nothing has been confirmed but, as things unfolded, Dane’s Mark Sloan could also drop in to complete the lineup for Grey’s Longtime fan favorite doctor characters whose lives were cut short by tragedy who now reunite with Meredith on the beach as she battles Covid-19.
“I would say the chances are good that you see other people on the beach,” Vernoff told Deadline earlier this month.
Leigh was on Grey’s Anatomy for six seasons, including five in the regular series.
