Romain Grosjean is eager to get back behind the wheel in Abu Dhabi, said Guenther Steiner, his Haas team manager, following the Frenchman’s massive crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix last weekend.

He will be replaced by reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi at the Sakhir Grand Prix this weekend, but is focused on his return to the race at Yas Marina, which will be his last with Haas, and for now at least, his last race in F1.

“Romain would like to do it [race in Abu Dhabi]Steiner said Tuesday. “I told him about it yesterday. He wants to be in Abu Dhabi. I said ‘try to improve, we talk Sunday or Monday and see if it’s doable’.

“We’ll cross this bridge when we get there. Pietro is here, Romain is here. We just need to see what he’s feeling. It depends on his health. “

Grosjean is treated for burns on the back of his hands at BDF hospital in Bahrain. This continues on Tuesday, with doctors recommending he stay another night as a precaution.

“I just spoke with one of his guys, like he was with the doctor before and they did something with the burns, I’m not sure exactly what,” Steiner added.

“There is another night in the hospital, but there is nothing to worry about. They just said it was a safer environment I guess, mainly because of the burns. They said we’re keeping you here another night.

“But everything is fine. His guy, who just spoke to him, told me that the doctors were happy with him and that the healing process was as they would have seen it coming. No recoil or nothing.

“He’s just trying to improve to try to be in the car in Abu Dhabi. This is [what he is] saying. So I think that shows he wants to keep doing it.

It was a big crash, the impact measuring 53G, Steiner saying it took him 27 seconds to get out of the car. When asked if Grosjean remembered the crash, the Haas boss said: “He remembers how he wanted to get out, or how he got out of it, he explained it to me very well.

“What he asked me was ‘How did I get there?’ and I said, “You run over Kvyat’s car, basically you turned right and you ran on his front wing, it turned you around and put you in the wall.”

“He said he hadn’t seen the car but I didn’t want to put words in his mouth and say he didn’t remember, I think he doesn’t realize what he’s got made. I wouldn’t say he lost his memory of it. The rest, I think it went so fast that he doesn’t remember it anymore, you’ll have to ask him yourself to be honest about what he remembers and what not.
