Ground beef is the food responsible for a mysterious outbreak of E. coli involving 109 cases of disease in six states, according to preliminary evidence, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
said Friday
.
"The sick people in this outbreak report eating ground beef at home and in restaurants," the CDC said in its report on the outbreak.
No supplier, distributor or brand has been identified as the source of the outbreak. As a result, no reminder has been issued and the CDC does not recommend consumers to avoid ground beef at the moment nor do the restaurants stop serving it.
Diseases are now reported in
six states
: Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and Indiana.
It's still a state and 13 other diseases since the last update reported by the CDC on Tuesday.
As part of the survey, 75 health investigators surveyed 75 of these cases. Eighty-four of them reported eating ground beef during the week before their symptoms appeared, according to the CDC.
Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. They start on average three to four days after the ingestion of the bacteria. Most people recover in five to seven days. The first reported symptoms of this outbreak began on March 2nd.
Seventeen patients were hospitalized because of their illness.
Federal, state and local health authorities continue their investigation.
Meanwhile, the CDC reminds consumers to prevent E. coli by washing their hands, cooking ground beef at an internal temperature of 160 degrees, measured with a meat thermometer, while keeping uncooked food safe -contamination.
