Duo – yin to yang failed by Allo in Google's messaging strategy of a few years ago – has not only gathered a wide audience of users over the past two years; he also managed to keep them. Apple's IMessage and Facetime still dominate the American landscape and Allo has failed to be completely closed, but Duo has become a popular and useful cross-platform video messenger, even though missing a key function: group calls.
In recent weeks, Google has gradually set up the group call feature. Since yesterday, it is now available in all areas for users of Android and iOS. With that, it becomes pretty clear that the web client (which is the best version for Chromebook users) is not on this list, but I bet it will not be long.
Everything works as you wish and to make a group call, all you need is select "create a group", select the contacts, then initiate the call. An interesting feature is the fact that these groups stay after the end of the call and stay in touch with your frequent contacts for quick one-touch group calls in the future.
Calls are limited to 8 participants and simply divide the screen more and more as additional callers join the group. Personally, I prefer the Hangouts method of showing the person speaking in full screen while showing other people in the room in a small window at the bottom or side, but maybe it will be a feature for coming years. For now, it's a great way to call a few people at once if you want to chat by video.
