Guatemalan child dies in US detention center, report says

The child was in hospital in the United States for several weeks after entering the United States with his mother, the Post reported, citing Guatemala's consul, Tekandi Paniagua, and another source.

CNN contacted the Department of Homeland Security and the Guatemalan Consul in Del Rio, Texas, but has not yet received a response.

The boy is the fourth Guatemalan child who died after a stop at the border since December.

Jakelin Caal Maquin, 7, died of a bacterial infection, in a hospital in El Paso, in December, two days after being detained with his father. A few weeks later, Felipe Gómez Alonzo, 8, died of a complicated flu sepsis while he was in custody at the border customs and protection.
Juan de León Gutiérrez, 16, died on April 30 in a Texas Children's Hospital, a few days after arriving at a refugee shelter center. The cause of his death has not been reported. A source close to the situation said at the time that he had shown signs of distress the day after he arrived at Casa Padre, a former Walmart in Brownsville, Texas.

The first two deaths motivated congressional hearings, and immigration authorities ordered an increase in medical checks for children in their care.

Homeland Security and CBP officials have announced new procedures, including additional medical checks for all children, especially children under 10 years of age.

CBP began reviewing its policies in December, focusing on the care of young children on arrival and beyond 24 hours in detention, the agency said.
