Gun Control Legislation: Trump should announce a proposal next week, but substance is a mystery

The Trump administration is expected to announce its proposal to reduce armed violence from next week. But after the heated Democrats debate over gun control, what President Trump will support will be far from clear.

The White House spoke to a trio of lawmakers: Democrats Chris Murphy and Joe Manchin and Republican Pat Toomey. They all support more severe background checks.

After the recent shooting in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso(Texas), Mr. Trump called for a law on gun control.

"I'm talking about meaning, write this word, meaningful, substantive background checks," Trump said on Aug. 9.

But Mr. Trump never defined the meaning of significant means and quickly withdrew after speaking to the National Rifle Association.

Comments from Beto O 'Rourke's Debate Could Complicate Proposals for New Firearms

"We already have a very serious background check," Trump said on August 21.

Since then, Mr. Trump has called mass shootings a mental health problem and has criticized what he sees as overzealous Democrats.

"Democrats want to confiscate the weapons of law-abiding Americans, so they are totally defenseless when someone enters their home with a gun," said Trump.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O 'Rourke reinforced the president's argument to this week's debate.

"Yes, we are going to take your AR-15, your AK-47, and we will no longer allow it to be used against fellow Americans," said Ours Rourke.

Some of his fellow Democrats now fear that O 'Rourke's remarks may be used to thwart their efforts to enact new gun laws.

"I honestly think this clip will be airing for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations trying to scare people into thinking that Democrats are coming to get your weapons," said Delaware Sen. Chris Coons.

The White House wants the president to be seen as a gun control action, because the majority of Americans support tougher laws. But his base is not as favorable and the president does not want to risk getting them angry before an election year.
