Gungrave GORE has been a long time coming, but its time is approaching. Although it was first announced by Gungrave VR developer Iggymob in 2017, numerous delays pushed back its release window to 2022. Publisher Prime Matter has revealed the first detailed look at its characters and gameplay in the form of a “Gameplay Reveal + Extended Cinematic” trailer “at the ongoing Tokyo Game Show 2021.

The Gungrave GORE The trailer opens with the violent, cinematic death of a gang of thugs at the hands of Grave, the main character. Grave emerges from a huge coffin and carries another behind his back to contain a number of built-in weapons. Gameplay sequences of different stages are displayed. This shows that the game is somewhat of a hybrid of a third-person shooter and a character action title. Grave uses two handguns, his coffin, and the powers of an undead super-soldier to lay waste to his enemies.

Gungrave GORE is based on long dormancy Gungrave series of action games. Before Gungrave VR, it was last released in 2004: Red Entertainment’s Gungrave: Overdose for the PlayStation 2. Gungrave follows the adventures of Grave, a man killed and resurrected to take revenge on the people who killed him. Gungrave features character designs from Trigoun creator Yasuhiro Nightow and Sakura Wars character designer Kosuke Fujishima.

A post on the PlayStation blog also highlighted the involvement of artist Ikumi Nakamura (formerly of Capcom and Tango Gameworks) in character design. In the interview, Nakamura revealed his “Ikumi-nized” approach to character design, revealing concept art for villainous Yensen Superior.

Gungrave GORE is in development for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It should be released in 2022.
