Gunman killed by Detroit police after murder of woman and shooting at police station, DPD says

STRAIT – A man armed with a high powered rifle was killed in a shootout with the police after murdering a woman for child custody and shooting at a police station, according to the authorities.

Officials said a 28-year-old woman was shot and killed by the 28-year-old at around 11:15 p.m. Monday in the neighborhood of Grand River and Warren avenues. on the west side of Detroit.

The two were in a dispute over a child custody issue, police said.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the man involved in the shooting approached the Fifth District in a large black SUV and came out with a “powerful” rifle. He fired about four shots in the police station, Craig said.

“He stops in front of the police station, he comes out with a high powered gun, leans over the hood and starts firing several shots at the police station,” Craig said.

Eric Decker, the major crimes commander for DPD, said bullets entered the first layer of bulletproof glass at the station, but were stopped by the second layer.

The lieutenant at the office called for help and, as the units responded, the gunman left the front of the police station, authorities said.

When he came across one of the responding police vehicles, the man shot, hitting it at least once in the windshield, officials said. The windshield glass struck the policeman driving the vehicle to the front, police said.

At around 5:15 a.m., the man was sitting inside a vehicle in the parking lot of a closed business, Craig said. Police knew he was armed and dangerous and made numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact him, officials said.

“They declared a suspect barricaded, and our special response team responded,” Craig said.

Police said after the shooting involving the woman, the man texted family members telling them he would kill the 28-year-old woman if her child was taken away. Then he referred to the police and an unspecified judge, authorities said.

Members of the special response team arrived and took armored vehicles to approach and prevent the man from moving. Police said they could see the man holding an AR-15 to his chest.

“As they walked in to block him, they could see he was holding an AR-15 to his chest,” Craig said. “As the officers said, ‘Let me see your hands,’ he shook his head negatively, and there was an exchange of gunfire between this subject and several of the SRT officers.

The man was fatally shot in the shootout, according to Craig. No officer was shot dead.

Craig said that while the man was sitting in the parking lot, he would activate the turn signals and hit the vehicle’s brakes to try to attract officers.

“If this suspect had left this location, there could have been more carnage,” Craig said. “Bad situation, all around.

The man had a history of domestic violence and an arrest warrant in Southfield, officials said.

Detroit Police are still investigating the case. This is the department’s 31st high-risk incident involving a barricaded person this year, Craig said.
