Gunman kills person inside Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, shoots 2 Philadelphia policemen ahead of arrest: police

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A gunman who fatally injured a person in a Philadelphia hospital and then shot two police officers is now in custody, Action News has learned.

The incident began at around 12:12 a.m. when gunshots erupted inside the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Hospital located in the 100 block of S. 11th Street in Center City.

Police said a man wearing blue scrubs, a mask and a black backpack shot a person on the 9th floor of the hospital. The unidentified victim later died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

Police told Action News the suspect then fled the hospital in a U-Haul. Officers were able to follow the gunman to the Parkside section of town where a shootout ensued.

The suspect shot two police officers and was later shot dead when one of the officers fired back, investigators said.

One officer was shot in the arm and another suffered a scraped nose. The two officers are listed in stable condition.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, is currently hospitalized. There was no immediate word on the gunman’s condition.
