Ten other companies have been cited for a lack of pandemic precautions in the workplace, according to a press release from the Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration on Friday, January 22.
Workplaces violated COVID-19 safety precautions like not having a preparedness plan, not requiring masks, or not cleaning and disinfecting the facility.
So far, 67 companies have been cited by MIOSHA for COVID-19 security breaches. The Michigan Liquor Control Commission and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also penalize companies that violate health ordinances.
MIOSHA can fine companies up to $ 7,000 per violation.
Employers must provide proof to MIOSHA that the issues have been resolved. Workplaces have 15 working days after receipt of the violation to dispute the citation, or can reach an agreement to reduce risk for a 50% reduction in penalties provided they do not appeal.

Most of the inspections that led to the 10 citations were triggered by complaints made to MIOSHA by employees. Six of the ten citations also include fines.

The inspection was initiated by a complaint from a staff representative.

Reasons: Failing to develop a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan and violating other non-COVID-19 workplace safety regulations. This inspection was initiated by a re-inspection mission.

An employee complaint triggered the inspection.

Reasons: Not developing a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan. The inspection was part of a scheduled inspection mission.

Reasons: Lack of a preparedness and response plan, lack of daily health screening including a questionnaire, and no requirement for facial blankets when social distancing cannot be maintained. The inspection was initiated by a referral from MIOSHA.
