UCLA star gymnast Nia Dennis caught our eye last year, when she performed a viral floor routine inspired by Beyoncé’s. Back home. Now aged, she’s back with another nod to black culture in a new floor routine that went viral again over the weekend. Dennis competed at a California college in Los Angeles, faced off against Arizona State, incorporating the music of Kendrick Lamar, Missy Elliott, 2Pac, Megan Thee Stallion and, of course, Beyoncé, into his routine. The performance featured Dennis marching (a tribute to her father, who was involved in Greek life, she later said) and raising his fist in salute to Black Power, while stunning the audience. We thought it was perfect, and the judges almost agreed, giving Dennis a score of 9.95 which led to the UCLA victory. At the post-victory press conference, Dennis called the routine a “dance party.” We will just continue to wait for this collaboration with Beyoncé.
