SURFSIDE, Florida – There are worrying reports of a hacker taking advantage of those killed in the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside.

Officials said the criminal saw the names of the victims in the newspapers and then stole their identities.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett told Local 10 News he is amazed and hopes an arrest will be made soon.

“(They) violated the rights of an individual, but worse than that, a deceased individual and a grieving family,” he said.

Families are encouraged to check the credit of their loved ones to make sure they too have not been targeted.

“It’s terrible,” Burkett said. “I can’t wait to put a face to these acts right now, and I think all of South Florida is anxious to see who would do something like this – what kind of person would do something like that. But I can’t wait for our police to apprehend them, and they’re out there looking for them. I wouldn’t want to be that person right now.

The mayor said he did not want to divulge further details on how the hacker was able to steal the identities of the victims because he did not think it was useful to divulge this information.

Authorities did not disclose further details of the crime or disclose the targeted victims.
