The Pirates have reached a minor league deal with the outfielder Brian goodwin, reports Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (via Twitter). He will be invited to Major League spring training.
Goodwin, 30, was the 34th pick in the 2011 draft but never consolidated with his home organization, the Nationals, despite a few productive stints. He was eventually traded to the Royals and later claimed by the Angels for waivers – enjoying some success in both cases. The Angels traded him to the Reds on last summer’s deadline, however, and Goodwin’s bat crated in Cincinnati, where he only hit 0.163 / .236 / .357 in a small sample. of 55 plaque appearances. The Reds didn’t do it in December.
Aside from that sad stint at Cincinnati, however, Goodwin has been a productive hitter in the Big League more often than not. He’s a .250 / .317 / .455 overall hitter, and as of 2019 he cut .262 / .326 / .470 in near-regular playing time with the Angels (136 games, 458 appearances to the plateau).
Goodwin doesn’t have particularly strong defensive odds and likely won’t see much (if any) time in center field with the Bucs. It’s best to deploy it in a corner, which the Bucs can certainly accommodate. Bryan reynolds, Anthony alford, Cole tucker and Gregory Polanco are the names most likely to compete for time on the pitch in Pittsburgh at the moment, although the Pirates jump at any opportunity they are provided to get rid of the rest of Gregory Polanco’s contract. Alford is yet to establish himself at MLB level, while Reynolds will look for a rebound after a disastrous follow-up to his brilliant rookie performance. Tucker, meanwhile, is a converted shortstop who will have to earn a job as himself.
Based on his track record and the shortage of established talent in the field in the Pirates Under Rebuild roster, Goodwin appears to have a good chance of both breaking the roster and gaining quite a bit of playing time. is indeed on the list, the Pirates could control it throughout the 2022 season through arbitration. Of course, if he makes the team and bounces back to the plate, he will immediately become a potential summer trade piece for a Pirates club looking to move all short-term assets for additional depth of perspective.
