Generation Umurangi wins the IGF Grand Prix

The Game Developers Choice Awards and the Independent Games Festival Awards took place yesterday as part of the GDC 2021. At the first, the roguelite of the Greek myth of Supergiant Underworld won the grand prize, while the independent photography sim Generation Umurangi won the Seumas McNally Grand Prix at the IGF Awards.

The GDCA Game of the Year award wasn’t the only trophy Underworld won that night, because Supergiant also took home the best design and best audio awards. Sucker Punch Productions also won two awards, in the Best Visual Art and Audience Award, for Ghost of Tsushima. And Best Debut went to multiplayer indie horror game Phasmophobia, from developer Kinetic Games.

On the IGF side, Generation Umurangi won the grand prize as well as the award for excellence in storytelling. Genesis Black also won two awards, for excellence in audio and excellence in visual art, and community-driven narrative sports simulation Blasball won the Nuovo award, for games that “think differently about games as a medium”.

The Game Developers Choice Awards also presented a Pioneer Award to Tom Fulp, who created the Flash game hosting site Newgrounds, and a Lifetime Achievement Award to Laralyn McWilliams, who has 28 years of industry experience including as Creative Director of Sony.
