SportsPulse: Dan Wolken explains why the wise considered this horse as a serious threat to win the Kentucky Derby.

Haikal became the second horse of the Kentucky Derby to be wiped off the field.

It was announced Friday morning that Haikal, who had finished third in the Wood Memorial, would not participate in the race for roses after training on Thursday morning at Churchill Downs.

The news comes after the morning favorite, Omaha Beach, was wiped out Wednesday night.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Haikal had a left hoof abscess.

"It will be a quick fix, but I do not know if it will be fast enough," McLaughlin said Wednesday. "He has to train for us to be comfortable with him … … it's always painful, he will not be."

Haikal was 30-1 and was going to leave 11th. He is 3-1-1 in five starts. Jockey Rajiv Maragh will be there if Haikal is still able to go. Maragh is 0 for 5 in the Derby.

The final deadline for the scratch is 9 o'clock on Friday.

Bodexpress was also the first eligible this year and replaces Omaha Beach. There is no second alternative, so the Derby will be raced with 19 horses.
