When the Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage in 2014, people were annoyed that they “rocked” completely without even bothering to hide that their instruments were unplugged. 9. Diana Ross leaves by helicopter
A lot of performers seem to be focused on the grand entrance to the Super Bowl halftime show, but Diana Ross was more concerned with her 1996 exit. As she was finishing her set, a helicopter flew into the stadium, a landed, picked her up, then flew away as she sat in the bird’s open cabin. Again, the Red Hot Chili Peppers wouldn’t even plug in their instruments.

In what may be the power move of all power moves, Michael Jackson kicked off his 1993 halftime show at the Rose Bowl by literally standing on stage doing absolutely nothing for about two minutes. Keep in mind that performers usually only have around 12 minutes of stage time, so Michael used around 17% of his performance just to watch the crowd in silence. It’s something only one of the greats in gaming history could pull off.
5. The entire 1991 halftime show
Have you ever watched a halftime show and thought, “man, would it be a lot better if it was all made up of young kids?” Probably not, but that’s pretty much exactly what Disney delivered with its 1991 show in Tampa. The show featured hundreds of kids singing and dancing, dozens of costumed Disney characters, and just an overall mess of nightmare fuel. The only appearances from actual adults came in the form of a message from President George HW Bush and a performance from New Kids on the Block.
All of this can best be summed up by the reaction of this poor child.
4. Katy Perry’s Left Shark
Katy Perry’s show in 2015 can be considered “a trip to the beach after taking a life supply of acid” and her most famous star was Left Shark. Whoever wore this costume seemed to have the time of a lifetime and apparently turned into a thug with a bunch of random dance moves. But Left Shark crushed them and, more importantly, became an instant viral star. Right Shark, however, was immediately fired and kicked out of society for being such a pathetic and annoying loser.
3. Lady Gaga’s rooftop jump
Lady Gaga decided to make a bold entry in 2017 by jumping off the roof of NRG Stadium in Houston, or at least appearing to do so. The jump was actually pre-recorded for somewhat obvious reasons, but that doesn’t really matter. What matters, however, is that it was the most hilarious jump anyone could have hoped for. Who jumps like that? Just an incredibly awkward and amazing way to take a so-called leap of faith. Long live Gaga.
2. The Indiana Jones Show
It’s impossible to pick just one moment from this series because it was utter madness … but also kind of badass? Five percent of Patti LaBelle, five percent of Tony Bennett and 90 percent of Indiana Jones choreographed fight scenes. (You really have to watch it all. It’s ridiculous.)
Disney, who produced the show, clearly wanted to put a shameless focus on promoting their new Indiana Jones ride to Disneyland and was willing to do whatever it took to make it happen … including TURN ON. A GUY ON FIRE.
Oh, and LaBelle and Bennett ended the show by singing “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” of, yeah, “The Lion King”.
I imagine the planning for this halftime show was like this scene from “Miracle” but instead of yelling “again!” over and over, Herb Brooks keeps whistling and yelling “MORE DISNEY!”
