Halo Infinite accessibility features detailed by 343 industries

Along with reiterating Xbox’s commitment to making games more accessible for “over 400 million disabled gamers globally,” 343 Industries provided an overview of some of the accessibility features of Halo Infinite.

These updates and more were part of Microsoft’s Xbox accessibility showcase, and Paige Johnson of 343 Industries stopped by to share some of the accessible and customizable features that will be part of Halo Infinite when it launches. December 8, 2021.

The team’s goal was to “make the most recent trip to the Halo universe more accessible to as many players as possible.” This includes series veterans and those who “struggled to play due to obstacles that had not been considered before”.

Some of these new features, as detailed by 343 Industries, include:

  • For the subtitles:
    • Adjust the background opacity
    • Activate the color coding of the dialogues by speaker
    • Choose whether you want captions for all dialogs or only story-related dialogs in Campaign
  • Customize the in-game menu and font size
  • Menu narration with adjustable narration speed for those fluent in screen readers
  • A new mode called “linear navigation” which allows users to navigate the user interface without needing to visually see how the controls are positioned on the screen to access them
  • Ability to change friendly and enemy colors to include more options than red vs. blue
  • More user interface settings, such as HUD (heads-up display) and reticle opacity to make it easier to identify information in the HUD
  • Text-to-speech and text-to-speech options for gamers who want to participate in push-to-talk and need to send a synthesized voice or receive a voice chat as synthesized text
  • New customizations allow gamers to control their sound experience with different volume sliders for a variety of in-game sounds
  • Customize controller, keyboard, and mouse to link keys, adjust sensitivity, and switch to taps and toggles versus holds
  • A new motion-assisted steering feature, which allows you to use additional controls to help steer wheeled vehicles rather than the classic “direction finder” mechanism

343 also strongly believes that “representation in games is important”. To live up to this mantra, he has worked with organizations such as Warfighter Engaged to “provide new prosthetic options for players to customize their Spartans.”

According to 343, “accessibility is a journey,” and he promises to keep updating Halo Infinite “in a way that allows as many people as possible to fight alongside the Master Chief.”

Microsoft also revealed some of its plans to improve accessibility on Xbox, including adding new game accessibility feature tags to the Microsoft Store to help the Gaming & Disability community know which games have any of the 20 accessibility features implemented. These include “Narrated game menus, subtitle options, input remapping, full keyboard support, and single stick gameplay.”

Other new features will also be launching on Xbox soon, including quick settings, color filters, night mode display, globalization of text-to-speech / text-to-speech chat settings, and more.
