There were eight more deaths from the coronavirus in Hamilton County on Tuesday – the largest one-day total to date in a wave that is expected to continue with upcoming holiday gatherings inside.
Of those who died, three were men and five were women; five were white, one was black and two were not yet determined; one was between 51 and 60, two were between 61 and 70, and five were over 81, bringing the total to 148.
Hamilton County recorded 246 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. The new total is 17,191.
Meanwhile, County Mayor Jim Coppinger pleaded Wednesday for retired medical staff to help manage the growing number of COVID patients in local hospitals. He said they would not be working directly with COVID patients.
County Mayor Coppinger said: “We call on anyone who is retired – that is, a nurse or any other kind of caregiver – who can help in hospitals. Not to help with COVID, but to free up opportunities for nurses who could go and help with COVID, so that we can have the option of adding more beds.
“If you are ready to serve as a nurse, not in a COVID-19 situation, but to come in and replace so that someone who is on the payroll so to speak can go and serve COVID patients. We have the bed capacity, but we also need nurses. This is something that we lack – not just in Hamilton County, but across the state, across the country. “
The number of coronavirus cases in Tennessee is 347,972 as of Wednesday with 2,118 new cases. There have been 92 other deaths from the virus, for a total of 4,466, state health department officials said.
The number of those who have recovered from the coronavirus in Hamilton County is 14,897, or 87%, and there are 2,146 active cases.
Hamilton County has 135 hospital patients with the virus, with 26 other suspected cases. Of these, 83 are county residents. There are 30 people in intensive care.
The state currently has 2,183 people hospitalized with the virus, 58 more than Tuesday.
There were 308,566 people who recovered from the virus in Tennessee (89%).
The numbers of tests are over 4.327 million statewide.

Rhea County: 1,583 cases, up from 16; 30 dead
Sequatchie County: 502 cases, up from 1; 5 dead
