Lewis Hamilton said he struggled to find the pace of a lap in a car whose settings are much better suited to tomorrow's race.
The Briton lost in pole position by only 0.006 seconds. Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, and he admitted that he struggled to keep pace throughout the weekend as he did not want to change his settings or compromise his race.
"The settings were the best for the race," Hamilton told reporters at Silverstone. "I think yesterday, I really struggled with that during one lap and I tried to improve it throughout the evening and today. ; hui.
"I felt good in P3 and really at the beginning of the qualifying session. But the situation deteriorated during the session and we found what we had yesterday.
"There was also wind, but the settings were still good and I did not want to change the settings I had too far.
"Fingers crossed, the strength in the race should be pretty good, but it depends on our position, the wind and many other factors."
The result of qualifying has allowed Bottas to overtake Hamilton in pole position this season, but the Finn is more concerned with the pace of the race.
"There was not much in there with Lewis, but in the second run, there were a lot of places where there was room for improvement," said Bottas.
"It was not a perfect lap, but I doubt that anyone made a perfect lap, because he was very sensitive to an error here and there because of the tarmac and the wind."
"The most important thing for me is the pure pace of the race under certain conditions," he said. "Year after year, you always learn and you go faster if you work. The essential thing is to turn these poles into victories. "
