The duo set the tone at the start of the session with Pirellis, but Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel took first place in his performance on his second play of 45 thousandths of a second.

Mercedes was one of the last teams to send their drivers for quick heats in soft, Bottas being the first to take the first place with a lap of 1m11,597.

The Finn then improved again to 1m11.275, before Hamilton ahead with a time of 1m11.245.

Bottas then progressed to 1m11.199 to go back, while Hamilton visited the Ste Devote evacuation route after a closure.

But Hamilton, in his 10th lap on the softs, managed to put a time 0.081 times faster than the best of Bottas, which proved good enough to end the session.

Vettel, who locked up at Ste-Devote 17 minutes from the end, had to back off to recover, after being stopped near the barrier, he retained third place, at 0.763.

Pierre Gasly finished fourth for Red Bull, less than a tenth behind Vettel. Alex Albon, Toro Rosso rider, was fourth in his first Monaco F1 weekend with a lap of 1m12.031s 54 minutes into the session.

Max Verstappen looked fast, but he missed a good part of the session after suffering an alleged leak, ending at 0.934s with a first-round pace.

He returned to the track in the finals and completed seven more laps without improving his previous time.

Haas rider Kevin Magnussen was the best of the group in seventh position at 1.056 seconds, which puts him ahead of Alfa Romeo by Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen.

Charles Leclerc, in the second Ferrari, finished 10th and 1,232 seconds after complaining of braking problems during the session.

Haas driver Romain Grosjean was 11th ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz.

Daniil Kvyat lost time in the final sector on his best lap and finished 14th at 1.459 and just ahead of Sergio Perez's Racing Point.

After a promising first practice session, the Renault was 16th and 17th, while Nico Hulkenberg was 0.016 faster.

This allowed them to overtake Lance Stroll, who was at 3,440, and Williams who associates George Russell – who was another to visit the evacuation route of Ste Devote – and Robert Kubica.
