A hand-drawn swastika was discovered inside an office building of the Nebraska Avenue complex of the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed Saturday a source at ABC News.

The hand-drawn image was removed and the case was returned to the Office of the Inspector General and the Office of Civil Rights and Freedoms.

"This display of hatred and cowardice does not represent the dedicated men and women of the Department of Homeland Security," said Andrew Meehan, Acting Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs, US Department of Homeland Security, in a statement issued to ABC News.

"It does not belong in an organization that works tirelessly to protect the American people and fight hate in all its forms," he added. The situation "is currently under investigation to ensure timely corrective action."
