The Nokia 6.2 is one of two new mid-range smartphones with the famous name launched at IFA 2019 in Berlin, Germany – and there is not much to choose between this smartphone and its brother a little more expensive, the Nokia 7.2.

Designed as an affordable mid-range handset for users who want a little more power and more robust photography capabilities than discount handsets, the Nokia 6.2 fits perfectly to the cheapest part of this vast segment of the market.

It comes with a Snapdragon 636 Full HD + 6.3-inch chipset, 3GB or 4GB RAM, 32GB or 64GB storage, triple-back cameras, a fingerprint scanner and a battery of 3,500 mAh.

Design and display

We found that 6.2 was seated in the hand while we were using the handset, and it is almost usable with one hand – although those with smaller palms will probably need to use both of them hands to reach all corners of the screen.

There is good news for audiophiles: on the top edge of the Nokia 6.2 is a 3.5mm headphone jack, while on the base of the handset you have a USB-C port for charging. It uses an LCD screen, which tends to be less rich in color than OLED displays, but the Nokia 6.2 is equipped with the company's PureDisplay technology, which enhances the color and vibrancy of the screen.

The screen looks good and has another important feature: automatic real-time scaling from SDR to HDR, which according to HMD provides a 64-fold increase in color tone.

Camera and battery

The Nokia 6.2 is designed to be a very affordable device, but it does not skimp on cameras, with three sensors at the back.

Your main sensor is a 16MP, f / 1.8 sensor that, according to our findings, was able to capture a good level of detail on shooting landscapes with bright colors.

The next step is the 8MP ultra-wide angle, f / 2.2 camera with a 118-degree field of view. This allows you to integrate more of your environment into a shot, but the detail is not as high and the dynamism is much lower than that of the main camera.

Finally, a 5 MP depth sensor complements the trio and provides the intelligence needed for bokeh-style portraits, where the background of your subject is blurry. You can adjust the blur level of the background in real time and you have the choice between three different blur effects allowing you to adjust your photo.

The interface is intuitive and we were able to easily adjust the bokeh mode to our preferences.

The Nokia 6.2 camera has one more important addition: the dedicated night mode. He will automatically suggest using it in low light conditions, although we have not been able to test it while we were on the phone.

Performance and specifications

The Nokia 6.2, like all current Nokia brand smartphones, is part of Google's Android One program, which offers you an almost standard version of the Android operating system and guarantees you two years of major updates and three years security patches.

This means that the Nokia 6.2 is well prepared for the future for years to come and that HMD Global is currently the fastest manufacturer in terms of rolling out a new Android software on the whole of his fleet. The Nokia 6.2 will receive the Android 10 upgrade shortly after its release.

With a Snapdragon 636 and 3GB chipset or 4GB RAM, there is enough power under the hood to allow Android to work properly and most of the applications you want to use should be able to run without too much trouble.

Early verdict

The Nokia 6.2 seems to be a serious contender at the affordable end of the Android smartphone market. It has a nice design, pretty good specifications and enough camera intrigues for the price to make an interesting proposition.

If this can really challenge Honor, Huawei and Motorola remain to be seen, but the first signs are positive.
