Hardware sales double as gaming spending in June increases 5% | US monthly charts

While the gaming industry as a whole does little more than keep pace with sales numbers inflated by last year’s pandemic, hardware sales spiked particularly sharply in June.

The NDP today released its U.S. game sales figures, showing overall consumer spending on games rose 5% to $ 4.93 billion for the month of June, following an increase of 3% in May and a decrease of 2% in April.

While spending on content and accessories was virtually flat, hardware sales more than doubled, up 112% to $ 401 million for the month.

The main driver behind that number was the Xbox Series X | S line of consoles, which for the first time won the title of best-selling hardware in terms of dollar sales. The PlayStation 5 has led dollar sales twice since launch (November 2020 and January 2021), with the Switch claiming the rest of the months. Neither the PS5 nor the X | S series have yet been able to outperform Switch on unit sales in any given month.

On the software side, spending on gaming content on console, mobile, PC, cloud and subscription services rose 1% to $ 4.32 billion.

In the PC and console space, Sony’s PS5-exclusive Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart led the way, more than doubling the franchise’s previous record for launch month sales, set by Ratchet and Clank in 2016. Other novelties that have reached the top 20 include Mario Golf: Super Rush in third place and Scarlet Nexus in fifth.

The chart has also seen big changes, with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 jumping from 51 to 17 after a Switch version was released and Sea of Thieves dropping from 36 to 20 after the surprise reveal of its update. of Pirates of the Caribbean A Pirate’s Life at E3.

A pair of previous top 10 titles – New Pokémon Snap and Returnal – fell out of the top 20 entirely.

Despite the strong increase in sales of new hardware, the aftermarket fell 1% to $ 207 million. Three of the four best-selling accessories were the PS4 DualSense controllers.
