The latest beta of Google Messages largely introduces a redesign of Material You, but the Dynamic Color aspect for Pixel devices running Android 12 is currently incomplete.
On the home screen, you will immediately notice the pill-shaped search box and the rounded FAB rectangle. Both of these feature Dynamic Color, with the latter button being brighter than the top bar, overflow menu, or settings screen. Search sees some tweaks and the background is slightly tinted, but oddly that’s the extent of Dynamic Color at the moment.
The conversation screen is virtually unchanged from before. Messages / replies and the editorial field are always pill-shaped and adopt the standard blue accent color. We expect Dynamic Color to color individual threads, but that hasn’t happened yet for all users today. Meanwhile, it’s unclear if any shapes will change.
Material You in Google Messages is currently rolling out with version 9.7.032 in the beta channel. When first installed, the wallpaper theme was not appearing on the home screen or conversation view, and we had to force quit before it appeared. However, the shape changes also appear on devices not running Android 12. Similar to the Google Phone app, the full implementation of Dynamic Color is expected to roll out with a future update.
This redesign follows the update of the messages accessory selector and unified emoji, GIF and user interface. Both of these changes were a bit more substantial than the state of Material You today.
