Hardware you redesign and deploy in Google Messages

[ad_1]

The latest beta of Google Messages largely introduces a redesign of Material You, but the Dynamic Color aspect for Pixel devices running Android 12 is currently incomplete.

Update 10/7: Following Messages version 10.0.014 (beta) yesterday and a server-side update today, Dynamic Color should be available to everyone on Android 12 running the latest version of the RCS / SMS client. Some received it last week, but the full-scale rollout has just happened for beta and stable users of Messages.

09/22 original: On the home screen, you will immediately notice the pill-shaped search box and the rounded rectangle FAB. Both of these feature Dynamic Color, with the latter button being brighter than the top bar, overflow menu, or settings screen. Search sees some tweaking and the background is slightly tinted, but oddly that’s the extent of Dynamic Color at the moment.

The conversation screen is virtually unchanged from before. Messages / replies and the editorial field are always pill-shaped and adopt the standard blue accent color. We expect Dynamic Color to color individual threads, but that hasn’t happened yet for all users today. It is not known if any shapes will change, as Google Sans is now used in the app.

Material You in Google Messages is currently rolling out with version 9.7.032 in the beta channel. When we first installed the wallpaper theme did not appear on the home screen or conversation view, and we had to force quit before it appeared. However, the shape changes also appear on devices not running Android 12. Similar to the Google Phone app, the full implementation of Dynamic Color is expected to roll out with a future update.

This redesign follows the update of the messages accessories selector and unified emoji, GIF and user interface. Both of these changes were a bit more substantial than the state of Material You today.

Update 9/29: As with Google Phone, Dynamic Color is now starting to roll out in Messages. Oddly, with the initial availability of Material You, some users have already seen DC but Google removed it shortly after. It’s not yet widely available today, but more and more people are getting it after a server-side update.
