Harry Winks comes back clean after scoring 53 yards in Ludogorets rout by Tottenham

Harry Winks confessed that his 53-yard howler was actually a pass in search of his Tottenham teammate Gareth Bale.

North Londoners won for the fifth game in a row, knocking out Ludogorets 4-0.

Winks scored his third just after the hour with a diagonal strike that passed the visitors goalkeeper.

But the midfielder is clear and has admitted he was trying to find the Welshman but has no problem taking the goal instead.

He told BT Sport: “I would love to sit here and say I did, but I have to be honest and say no. I saw Gaz (Gareth Bale) running. I’m going to take him to the end of the day.

“It’s been a while (since I last scored) but I’m happy with the way the team played.

“It was really nice. We started with the right intensity because we didn’t give them a chance to breathe. It was a good game for us.”

Winks has struggled to seize opportunities in recent months, having fallen down the pecking order.

But as he pushes for more minutes, he’s aware that he must seize opportunities when they arise.

“It’s difficult. It’s very difficult,” he added. “All I can do is play well.”

One man who tried his luck was striker Carlos Vinicius who scored a brace.

The Brazilian was a summer rookie from Benfica and will spend the season on loan in the capital.

His compatriot Lucas Moura then closed the scoring in the 73rd minute to keep Tottenham on track for the round of 16.

Tanguy Ndombele was the only man of the weekend to keep his place in a very changed squad, but Jose Mourinho was more than impressed by those who came in for him.

He said: “I’m happy for them, some players had very good performances. Japhet Tanganga made his first game after a long injury, good chance for the children to make history. 4-0 and three points, it’s good.

“I know the kids well. Harvey White works with us every day on our team, like Jack Clrke, Dane Scarlett did the preseason with us.

“We know what they can do, but it must be the right time and today was the right push for them.”
