Harvick claims provisional pole for Richmond

Kevin Harvick took the unofficial pole of the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway with a lap of 124.298 mph (21.722 seconds).

The qualifying results are official until the inspection takes place on Saturday afternoon.

"Really proud of all the players on team # 4 and Stewart-Haas Racing," said Harvick of his third pole and 27th place in Richmond. "We did a great job today.

"I did not think it was a perfect lap from my point of view, but I managed to put the throttle out of the corner and make a good lap. So, you just have to go faster than everyone else.

Harvick will be joined in first place by Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Erik Jones, who has completed a lap of 124.081 mph. Chevrolet driver Kurt Busch was third in 123.870 mph.

Joey Logano at 123.672 mph and Kyle Busch at 123.598 mph complete the top five. Busch is looking for his third consecutive victory in Richmond after sweeping the 2018 races on the site. He is also the most recent winner of the NASCAR Cup series after his victory last weekend in Bristol.

Martin Truex Jr. at 123.400 mph, Chase Elliott at 123.153 mph, Austin Dillon at 1222.962 mph, Daniel Suarez at 122.610 mph and Jimmie Johnson at 122.166 mph were in the top 10.

Chris Buescher (122.139 mph) and Brad Keselowski (122.061 mph) were the other two riders to qualify for the final qualifying round.

Kyle Larson (14th), Denny Hamlin (18th) and Clint Bowyer (21st) will be further in the pack. Ryan Blaney and Ryan Newman failed to qualify for the first qualifying round and finished 29th and 31st respectively.
