Hawaii reports 2 coronavirus-related deaths and 200 new infections

Hawaii State Department of Health officials today reported two new deaths and 200 coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the start of the pandemic to 309 deaths and 23,341 cases.

The deaths included one person in Oahu and a resident of Hawaii diagnosed out of state. No further details of the deaths were immediately available.

The state’s official coronavirus death toll includes 243 deaths on Oahu, 45 on the island of Hawaii, 18 on Maui, one in Kauai and three Hawaii residents who died on the mainland. The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said today the COVID-19 death toll on Big Island remained at 51, but state officials have not verified the coronavirus as a factor in six of these deaths.

New cases of infection statewide reported by the Department of Health today include 128 in Oahu, 30 in Maui, 12 on Big Island, 9 in Kauai, and 21 state residents diagnosed outside of Hawaii, officials said. As a result of updated information, one case from Oahu and one from out of state were taken off the accounts.

Statistics released today reflect the new cases of infection reported to the department on Friday.

The total number of coronavirus cases per island since the start of the epidemic is 19,198 in Oahu, 2,006 in Hawaii County, 1,277 in Maui, 166 in Kauai, 106 in Lanai and 25 in Molokai. There are also 563 Hawaii residents diagnosed out of state.

Health officials in Hawaii said today that of the state’s total infections, 2,152 cases were considered active. Health officials say they regard infections reported in the past 14 days as a “surrogate number for active cases.” The number of active cases in the state has increased by 84 today.

Per island, Oahu has 1,598 active cases, Maui 384, the Big Island has 144, and Kauai has 23 and Molokai has three, according to the state’s latest tally. Lanai has no active COVID cases.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 1,558 required hospital admissions, with 15 new hospitalizations reported today by state health officials.

Four statewide hospitalizations are residents of Hawaii who were diagnosed and treated out of state. Of the 1,554 hospitalizations in the state, 1,370 were in Oahu, 92 on the Big Island, 79 in Maui, 7 in Kauai, 5 in Lanai and one in Molokai.

According to the latest information from the Hawaii COVID-19 Department’s data dashboard, a total of 129 patients infected with the virus were in hospitals in Hawaii as of 8:30 a.m. Friday, including 24 in intensive care units and 20 on ventilators.

State health officials said on Thursday that they had started posting the total number of vaccinations administered statewide. On Saturday, the department said 25,470 people had been vaccinated – including 17,991 in Honolulu County, 3,013 in Maui County, 2,526 in Hawaii County and 1,940 in Kauai County. Vaccination numbers are updated weekly.

Oahu moved to the less restrictive Level 2 of Honolulu’s four-tier economic stimulus package on October 22. . To move to level 3 of level 2, the 7-day average of new cases must be less than 50 on two consecutive Wednesdays. In addition, the average 7-day positivity rate must be less than 2.5% on these two Wednesdays.

Today, the seven-day average number of cases for Oahu is 129 and the seven-day average positivity rate is 4.1%, according to Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, who said Thursday that Oahu would remain at level 2.
