Hawaii sees 164 new cases of coronavirus, bringing total to 39,254 statewide

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported 164 new confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, bringing the state’s total since the start of the pandemic to 39,254 cases.

No new deaths from the virus were reported today, so the statewide death toll from COVID-19 remains at 523.

The state’s official coronavirus death toll includes 405 deaths on Oahu, 57 on Maui, 56 on the island of Hawaii, two in Kauai and three Hawaii residents who died out of state.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the United States today is over 609,000 and the number of infections nationwide is over 34 million.

Today’s new number of confirmed and probable infections by island includes 104 new cases in Oahu, 12 in Maui, 18 in the island of Hawaii, six in Kauai and 24 residents of Hawaii diagnosed outside the ‘State.

State health officials included probable infections in the total number of cases. Likely infections include people who have never received a confirmatory test but are suspected of having had the virus because of their exposure and known symptoms or because of a positive antigen test.

The total number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases per island since the start of the epidemic is 28,774 in Oahu, 4,813 in Maui, 3,463 in Hawaii County, 471 in Kauai, 115 in Lanai and 81 in Molokai. There are also 1,537 residents of Hawaii who have been diagnosed out of state.

Today’s probable infections since the start of the pandemic added to the tally today include 840 in Maui, 824 in Oahu, 80 on the island of Hawaii, 24 in Molokai, three in Kauai, three in Lanai and 61 residents diagnosed out of state.

Statistics released today reflect the new cases of infection reported to the department on Friday.

Health officials counted 8,294 new COVID-19 test results in today’s tally, for a positivity rate of 1.9% statewide. The state’s 7-day average positivity rate is 3.1%, according to the Hawaii COVID-19 Data Dashboard.

Hawaii’s latest COVID-19 vaccine summary shows 1,723,223 doses of the vaccine have been administered through state and federal distribution programs as of Friday, up 2,308 from the previous day. Health officials say 59% of the state’s population is now fully vaccinated and 65% have received at least one dose.

Of all confirmed cases of infection in Hawaii, 2,561 required hospitalizations, with seven new hospitalizations reported today.

According to the latest information from the department’s Hawaii COVID-19 Data dashboard, a total of 58 patients with the virus were in hospitals in Hawaii on Friday, including 13 in intensive care units and nine on ventilators.

The seven-day average number of cases for Oahu is 66 and the seven-day average positivity rate is 3.3%, state health officials said today.
