IOWA CITY, Ia. – After a delay of several hours linked to COVID-19, the Iowa women’s basketball game scheduled for Thursday against Michigan will begin around 8:30 p.m. inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m., the game was delayed “in conjunction with COVID-19 protocols.”

Michigan and Iowa staff members initially returned to the ground around 7:15 p.m., and Hawkeyes players Lauren Jensen, Tomi Taiwo, Alexis Sevillian and Zion Sanders followed suit about five minutes later. Eventually, all of Iowa’s roster returned for a shoot – minus sophomore guard Gabbie Marshall and junior forward Logan Cook. The Michigan players also returned to the ground.

“(The players) kind of created momentum to get up for the game, so they’ll kind of have to come back down a bit, and then be ready to come back immediately whenever the prediction comes up,” Iowa Assistant Coach Raina Harmon said on the pre-game show around 3:30 p.m. CT, shortly after the game was officially delayed. “Again, we’re not going to settle for nothing because the dynamics have changed around this game. We expect 100% focus and effort from our team.”

It was clear that something was wrong before the originally scheduled time. Michigan never went out for warm-ups.

The Wolverines were recently on a COVID-19 hiatus, having six games postponed (including five in a row) between January 18 and February 7. Michigan have played four games since their break ended. Iowa hasn’t had a break this season, but two games have been postponed by COVID-19.

“Both institutions have decided to delay the game in conjunction with COVID-19 protocols and will play later today if possible,” said one version from Iowa, which dropped around 3:15 p.m. “If the game is not played today, the teams will work with the Big Ten Conference to postpone the contest.

“The decision to suspend and delay was made jointly by the Michigan and Iowa Department of Track and Field and sports medicine staff in consultation with the Big Ten Conference.”
