Snapchat had its time in the mid-2010s before Millennials, Generation Z and Kylie Jenner decided it wasn’t cool. In a late attempt to get young people to invest in an app better used to send nudes and play with anime filters, Snapchat now has has teamed up with HBO Max to deliver a free series or season one episodes of Gossip Girl, Game of thrones, Euphoria, and more, starting today.
The feature, called HBO Max Mini, is only available in the US for now and “instantly launches into Snapchat with no installation required, features age-appropriate episodes, and is available on iOS and Android,” according to the press release. The application also includes a feature that allows users to watch shows with up to 63 of their closest friends, with chat and Bitmoji reactions to let people know what you really think about the last Gossip Girl turn.
Will the prospect of watching blockbuster shows for free bring teens back to snapchat? Most people who want to watch HBO Max shows probably have ever asked a friend or relative to log in, or tried to download their programming online illegally. And the phone screens are tiny! Aren’t people much more likely to watch an episode longer than 20 minutes on their laptops instead? the partnership has a strong “Hhow are you, comrades? Energy, and we doubt that will make Snapchat cool again—but HBO Max gets points for trying.
