Don’t be fooled by the director Denis Villeneuve’s insistence that his Dune the adaptation will be “Star wars for adults, “ because it will be as much a multimedia franchise as a regular one Star wars-but not one with BB-8s or Babu Friks. The film, who just got a new trailer, will be released later this year, but HBO Max has been working quietly in the background on a Dune prequel series titled Dune: brotherhood. The project seemed to have stalled years ago when showrunner Jon Spaihts stepped down to focus on work on Villeneuve’s not-yet-lit sequel. Dune, but now it’s back with The Haunting of Bly’s Mansion writer Diane Ademu-John signs on to become the new screenwriter and showrunner.
The series will focus on the Bene Gesserit, a “mysterious order of women” who have developed “extraordinary abilities through their mastery of body and mind”. Variety said it will all run until you find the planet Arrakis, aka the place in the trailer with all of the, you know, the big sand hills. Villeneuve is set to direct the first episode of the series, which also has the succession of the original Dune author Frank Herbert on board to executive produce.
Dune: brotherhood is just one entry in a long line of ties to HBO Max movies, which also includes The suicide squad spin off Peacemaker with John Cena (a prequel to this film) and a kind of The batman chaining it is definitely not Fox’s Gotham even though it sounds like the same basic idea as Fox’s Gotham– which, to be fair, was a basic idea that was picked up from Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka Gotham Central comics. The show will be about the cops in Gotham, but the last time we heard it, it still wasn’t clear if anyone from Matt Reeves The batman would actually stop.
