HBO Real time with Bill Maher is now set to extend its duration beyond the two-decade mark, as the network announced today that it has renewed the program until 2024. Given this longevity, it is unlikely that the show changes things compared to the established and successful formula that has kept it working all this time: Maher’s opening monologue, individual interview, round table, New rules ”, followed by all of us wake up on Saturday morning, analyze briefly whatever the most boring things Maher said the night before were, and then just try to live our life.
To be fair, the show changed, like most late-night televisions, during the disruption of the COVID-19 era, including the implementation of proper quarantine procedures when Maher himself tested positive for the disease, and without a hearing for several months. Maher, meanwhile, was never that his often exhausting, perversely indefatigable self, admitting with a “Probably? I do not know” that the COVID-19 vaccine likely helped ease symptoms of the disease, but by continuing to assert skepticism about the need for generalized vaccination or booster shots, because Bill Maher is not an expert on anything except anything that turns out to be boring or inconvenient Bill Maher any day.
Maher has been on HBO since 2003, where Real time took over homework of “letting Bill Maher just sort of say shit” abdicated by ABC when canceled Politically incorrect in 2002, citing low marks and denying that he had done so because of Maher’s comments about 9/11.
