HBO's "Los Espookys", co-created by Fred Armisen, is a fun and refreshing comedy

They are not ghosts, nor vampires of "What we do in the shadows," who live on Staten Island. But the scary friends in the center of "Los Espookys," HBO's new horror comedy (focusing on comedy), are agreeably zany business.

It is perhaps not surprising that the tone of "Los Espookys" sometimes resembles a mix of "Portlandia" and telenovelas. This is because Fred Armisen, a co-creator and costar of "Portlandia", co-created "Los Espookys" with Ana Fabrega and Julio Torres, and the action takes place mainly in a Latin American country that looks like Mexico.

The offbeat comedy of "Los Espookys" fits in the HBO niche, but the show is a bit unusual in that most of the dialogues are in Spanish, with English subtitles. When the characters speak English, their lines are translated into Spanish subtitles. End credits are also in both languages. For example, Lorne Michaels, whose Broadway Video company also produced "Portlandia", is identified as executive producer / executive producer / producer or executive producer.

The six episodes of the first season of the first season are centered on Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco), horror movie lover and his friends, who are creating a company creating terrifying and scary experiences for customers in search of & # 039; And phony exorcisms and equally chilling delights.

Other members of the "Los Espookys" team include Andrés (Torres), who favors hair dyeing with electric blue and rests in the comfort offered by the family chocolate company, while saying to everyone (including his boyfriend obsessed with the apparent appearance) in his background.

Úrsula (Cassandra Ciangherotti), flawless technical expert, is less inclined to the drama than Andrés. She is able to prepare the material to make sure that a bed seems to engulf someone. Fabrsula's sister, Tati (Ana Fabrega), is a weird ball that does not seem to have any talent for the horror show, but is a game for what the rest of the team wants to shoot.

Armisen also has a recurring role as Renaldo's star, Tico, who works as an outstanding parking valet in Los Angeles.

The chemistry of distribution is easy and fun. Fabrega, a comedian who played in "Portlandia" and "High Maintenance", and Torres, a former writer and comedian of "Saturday Night Live", work well with Velasco and Ciangherotti, making us believe that this unlikely assortment of personalities are of good friends.

With its light touch and affection for the weaknesses of its characters, "Los Espookys" is refreshing, different and, above all, fun.

"Los Espookys" is created at 23h. Friday, June 14 on HBO.
