HC Ron Rivera Panthers give their opinion on Will Grier

As the Carolina Panthers enter the final week of the pre-season, they have a bit of a dilemma ahead of them at the quarterback position.

Starter Cam Newton left the final pre-season game in New England and left the stadium with an ankle on his left foot. Newton's has also recovered from a shoulder injury he suffered last season, losing considerable time near the end of the season.

With Newton also entering the final year of his contract, the Panthers decided it would be a good idea to draft a quarterback – Will Grier insert.

Earlier in the day, head coach Ron Rivera quickly commented on Grier's performance so far: "He's going to help us someday."

It's a pretty broad statement, so it's unclear when that day will be or how far it will help them in the future. Grier had some difficulty adjusting to the NFL, like most rookie quarterbacks, but he also showed a few flashes of what he could do once he learned the ropes.

With Cam Newton's status in the air for the first week, the battle between Grier and Kyle Allen is even more critical. If Newton is unable to go or aggravate his injury, Grier or Allen will have to be ready to leave.

Rivera was also asked if it was planned to train other quarterbacks, but the answer was no. He likes the potential of both guys even though he was disappointed with the placement of the ball.

To date, Grier has completed 23 passes out of 43 (53.5%) for 196 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Panthers will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday at 7 pm for the team's final pre-season game.
