It was recently explained why FreeSync support over HDMI fails open source drivers, at least not yet … This stems from the HDMI Forum’s decision to prevent public access to the HDMI specification, which in turn hurts open source graphics drivers.
As the HDMI specification is no longer public but only for “HDMI adopters”, this complicates the support of open source GPU drivers. Even those who are part of the HDMI Forum like AMD cannot in turn provide an open source implementation of the functionality covered by the closed specification to potentially and indirectly open some aspects of it to the public.
This situation seems to be the main obstacle as to why FreeSync with the open-source AMDGPU Linux kernel driver only works with DisplayPort and not with HDMI connections, which has always been one of the main questions regarding FreeSync Linux support. and its current shortcomings.
Current HDMI specification restrictions compromise the implementation of many advanced HDMI features for HDMI 2.1 in open source graphics drivers.
The X.Org Foundation is asking the HDMI Forum to at least allow the public disclosure of some HDMI 2.1 specification information so that open source graphics drivers can in turn (legally) implement the feature.
Hopefully this will work in 2021 … In the meantime, keep this in mind when deciding DisplayPort vs HDMI preferences!
