Throughout the afternoon, rioters repeatedly emerged from the Capitol carrying trophies they had stolen. A few were carrying “Closed Area” signs which they had grabbed and then whirled around. But it was all that had been taken from President Nancy Pelosi’s desk that was especially popular with the crowds.
One person came out holding up a piece of wooden plaque marking the entrance to Ms Pelosi’s office, which someone appeared to have torn from a wall. The rioter held it up like a trophy, as hundreds of people on the steps below clapped wildly. “Not our speaker!” cried a woman. “Bring her out!” shouted another man.
Richard Bigo Barnett, 60, of Gravette, Ark., Stood outside the Capitol, his shirt torn and his bare chest in the cold, loudly bragging about how he had broken into the office of the speaker.
“I wrote him a nasty note, put my feet on his desk,” said Barnett, nicknamed Bigo. It was holding up an envelope with the speaker’s letterhead he had taken from Ms Pelosi’s desk. He insisted he hadn’t stolen it – “I put a quarter on his desk.”
Mr Barnett continued: When the police arrived with pepper spray, “I said, ‘I paid for this, this is mine, and I left.’” His face was puffy from being hit with pepper spray, but he laughed and entertained other protesters with his story.
His account was supported by a photo later posted to social media which showed Mr Barnett sitting at Ms Pelosi’s desk with his feet in the air, as he had described it.
Mr Barnett insisted he had just knocked on the door when pushed by the crowd. It was a story he knew no one would buy. “I’m probably going to tell them that is what happened up to DC jail,” Barnett said.
