FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – Seven children and two adult drivers were killed in a head-on collision in central California on New Years Day, authorities said.
The children, aged 6 to 15, were members of two related families traveling in a 2007 Ford that collided with a Dodge vehicle at around 8 p.m. Friday on State Route 33 between Avenal and Coalinga, the county coroner’s office of Fresno and California. Says Highway Patrol.
Evidence from the scene indicated that the Dodge driven by a 28-year-old man was moving south on the freeway when it veered onto the dirt shoulder for some reason, CHP said. The driver then over-corrected and swerved into the southbound lane, colliding with the female-driven Ford.
The Ford caught fire on the shoulder of dirt, while the Dodge came to a stop straddling the two lanes of the highway, the CHP said. All eight people inside the Ford were killed, including the seven children.
The driver of the Dodge has been identified as Daniel Luna d’Avenal. The coroner’s office was working on identifying victims in the Ford.
