Health alert issued for medicines related to heartburn

DETROIT – A serious health alert was launched Saturday morning for drugs related to heartburn.

The Food and Drug Administration says the drug Zantac contains low levels of a cancer-related chemical.

This chemical called NDMA is associated with an increased risk of cancer of the colon and uterus. Last year, a medicine against high blood pressure was recalled due to the chemical substance.

Until now, no reminder has been issued, as the FDA continues to investigate to determine if low concentrations posed a serious health risk.
