Health authorities have confirmed two cases of mumps at the University of Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Health officials say two students at Indiana University have mumps.

The Monroe County Health Department says the students are roommates. The health department and the school are working to alert people likely to have been in close contact with the students.

Symptoms usually appear 16 to 18 days after infection, but can range from 12 to 25 days. In general, mumps is a mild disease and some people may have no symptoms. Although the virus can cause complications and more serious problems, they are usually rare, with a complication rate of 1 to 3%.

Symptoms include fever, headache and muscle aches.

The treatment of mumps is focused on relieving symptoms. Bed rest, a mild diet and a pain reliever for body aches are generally recommended.
