A former employee at a Wisconsin medical center forced 500 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine to be thrown away after deliberately removing dozens of vials from the refrigeration.
Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, Wisconsin originally believed that 57 vials of the recently approved Moderna vaccine, which must be stored between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit, were accidentally left out without refrigeration on Dec. 26.
However, Aurora officials announced wednesday that the responsible person “intentionally” removed these vials from refrigeration, resulting in the discarding of approximately 500 individual doses.
“We are more than disappointed that this person’s actions are causing a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine,” the hospital system said in the announcement, adding that the unnamed person “is no longer employed by us.
According to a Washington Post report, citing Grafton police, the FBI and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating the incident.
The state reported more than 477,000 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. According to state data last updated on Tuesday, just over 47,000 vaccines have been administered in Wisconsin so far.
The Trump administration’s vaccine distribution efforts under Operation Warp Speed have recently been criticized by President-elect Joe Biden (and his fellow Americans) for being slower than necessary.
“As I have long feared and warned, the effort to distribute and administer the vaccine is not progressing as it should,” Biden said, while vowing to speed up the process once he takes his steps. functions.
