Anthony Joshua will defend his heavyweight titles WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO against Andy Ruiz at Madison Square Garden on June 1, officially announced on Wednesday.
Joshua, undefeated in 22 fights, was originally expected to face Jarrell Miller during his American debut in New York.
However, Miller was sidelined due to the failure of the drug tests, leaving Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter, looking for a replacement.
While Michael Hunter and Luis Ortiz were considered as possible options to fill the void, Californian Ruiz (32-1) has now signed an agreement to fight.
The 29-year-old beat the WBO title against Joseph Parker in December 2016, losing by majority decision in New Zealand.
Eddie Hearn, Ruiz's promoter, did his best to get Ortiz, but says that they dropped the ball.
"I received two phone calls when the [Miller] the news was immediately announced. One was Don King and the other was Jay Jimenez, who runs Luis Ortiz. Jay Jimenez phoned me and said, "I can not believe it, I do not think Luis will be ready." I think I spoke to "AJ" about an hour ago and he said to look for it with anyone "Hearn said IFL TV.
"I said:" Find yourself if Luis will be ready. "He came back the next day or two days later and said:" Make us an offer. & # 39; 39 I made them an offer of $ 6 million – that was my first offer … I'm not coming back on this offer.I love Jay Jimenez, so I do not want to criticize him too much because I do not think it's his fault, but I just want the facts to be accurate …
"No answer, it was Friday, Monday, I said," I'll call you. "Later in the day, I came back and said," Well, that's it, $ 7 million for June 1st. [If he wins, he gets] a revenge for a little more and if he loses, I will give you another battle for a lot of money for security. "Nothing in return."
"Not only have you been offered $ 7 million, but you have tried to make the public known to us in the media, to try to scare our reputation and to discredit us, you were offered $ 6 million, then Millions of dollars for a fight, and how much did you have when you fought Deontay Wilder, I do not know, $ 1 million, if so, then you were offered seven times more to fight Anthony Joshua.
