A heat advisory will be in effect Monday in much of the Boston metropolitan area, with temperatures expected to rise in the 1980s and heat index levels in the 1990s.

The National Meteorological Service issued a heat advisory from 11 am to 8 pm for parts of the counties of Norfolk, Middlesex, Bristol and Plymouth.

"Drink a lot of liquids, stay in an air-conditioned room, out of the sun and check the status of your parents and neighbors," forecasters said on Monday.

The areas of western Massachusetts, particularly Hampden County, and much of Connecticut will also be subject to heat notice in the middle of the day, with similar levels of heat index, which, according to the forecasters, will reach 96 degrees.

"Heat Index" is a measure of the heat felt externally with the combined air temperature and relative humidity. Monday's day should be relatively wet, with a dew point reaching the 70s. According to the weather service, the Boston area could see a brief respite in the evening, with low risks of thunderstorms and rain starting around 18 hours.
