Heavy snowfall expected, second winter storm later this week

STRAIT – Severe snow will flood the Detroit subway Monday night, leaving almost all of us with more than half a foot. A second storm is also on its heels for later this week.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for all of Southeast Michigan from 6 p.m. Monday through noon Tuesday.

There won’t be a lot of nuance or tricky forecasting issues with this one. It will only be brute force snow, and for such a prolific snowmaker, the amounts will not vary much across the region.

Expect the lowest totals to be around 5 inches in Livingston and Genesee counties, with the highest totals up to 8 inches on the east side, which will be closest to the core of the snow. Check page 4ZONE for detailed figures.

Widespread snow will subside by 7:00 am Tuesday in all but the northeast corner of our northern area. There will be lake effect flurries in our northern area during the morning, but areas south of M-59 are unlikely to see any of these actions.

There’s already a twin storm right behind our Presidents Day crush. We won’t get as much snow from that one as the trail will be a bit further east. It is therefore not an identical twin, just a fraternal twin.

This storm begins Thursday afternoon and continues until noon Friday. The accumulations appear to be on the order of 2 to 4 inches.

The coldest air in two years has yet to arrive. It will be here from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. The minimum forecast for the metropolitan area is 2 degrees, with some areas dipping below zero.

If you are tired of the cold and want relief, view the 10-day forecast which brings us closer to 40 degrees at the start of next week!
