And just like that, the DWL has a new champion.

Heels concluded its inaugural season on a surprising and satisfying note. Crystal, who was told she couldn’t wrestle in the DWL, won the championship in the main event at Georgia State Fair, and she was not initially a part of that game. But with Wild Bill unavailable (he pooped his pants and couldn’t move) and Ace crushing his brother Jack in an actual brawl, it was up to the aspiring wrestler to defuse the volatile situation by taking on Ace herself.

As the last one standing in the ring, Crystal was given the nod from Jack to climb the ranks and take the belt. It’s a fitting ending that series creator Michael Waldron said had always been the plan.

Kelli Berglund in Heels Season 1“Very early on in the writers room in 2017, we knew we wanted to make it happen with her,” Waldron told TVLine. “It was like a really rewarding ending to her one-season story that, at the same time, makes you wonder: where does she go from there?”

Crystal is an amalgamation of barrier-breaking female wrestlers from the past and present – from Trish Stratus to Becky Lynch – who have proven time and time again that women are just as fun in the ring as men. Now that she’s the champion, it opens the door for other women to lock themselves in a DWL ring.

“You can say that some of the best games and scenarios are in the women’s division. There is that same opportunity for growth and expansion within DWL, so it will be interesting to see what Jack does with them, ”said Waldron. “Kelli Berglund [who plays Crystal] is obviously amazing, and so what it would be like to bring rivals for her could be a lot of fun.

Heels has yet to be renewed for season 2 – Waldron says the conversations are “on the way” – but if the show returns, it will also have to address the Spade brothers and their argument in the middle of the ring. Jack was finally clear with Ace about planning the first incident with the handkerchiefs that triggered Ace, and he nearly strangled his older child to death during their match. The finale ended with the brothers still at odds and unlikely to be reconciled anytime soon.

Allen Maldonado in Heels Season 1“They have folded all season. At the end of this last episode, as they actually fight in the ring, there’s a lifetime of rivalry and jealousy exploding in that ring, ”says Waldron. “I think they finally broke up, and there is the question: where do they go from here? Who is Jack sans Ace? And who is Ace without Jack? These are all interesting things to explore.

Other potential stories to explore include Ace finding some sort of therapy (“Ace is a guy who’s been through some level of seismic trauma and is trying to process those feelings the best he can”) and delves into some of the supporting characters in the series like Diego and the Apocalypse.

“Yes [the DWL is going to] succeed, you’re going to have to watch Jack start doing the hardest thing for him, which is to give up some control. Part of it means listening to other wrestlers like Rooster [and] Diego and maybe giving these guys the push they deserve. Season 1 is so much about fighting failure. Looking to the future, it is interesting to ask: What are the difficulties of success that this team could face together?

Waldron adds that “our creative team talks and discusses what we want to do [in Season 2]. Hopefully we can continue the story because obviously we’re just getting started. “
