The princess demands a warning.
“The Crown” star Helena Bonham Carter believes Netflix has a “moral responsibility” to warn viewers that they are not watching a documentary.
The actress, who played Princess Margaret for two seasons in the Royal Drama, said on the show’s official podcast that there was an important distinction between “our version” and the “live version”.
“It’s dramatized. I feel really strong, because I think we have a moral responsibility to say, ‘Hang on guys, this isn’t … this isn’t a doc-drama, we’re doing a drama. So they’re two different entities, ”said Bonham Carter.
Season 4 of the show sparked an uproar over the unfriendly portrayal of the monarchy and especially Prince Charles – with royal pundits fearing that the Windsor family’s reputation could be damaged.
The 54-year-old actress’ comments emerged after UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told the Mail on Sunday he would write to Netflix amid growing concerns that the reputation of the Royal Family would be soiled by fictional scenes from the series.
“Without this, I fear that a generation of television viewers who have not experienced these events may have confused facts with fictions,” he warned.
Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer has also pushed for warnings.
“I think it would help ‘The Crown’ tremendously if at the start of each episode he said, ‘It’s not true but it’s based on real events,'” he told ITV.
“I’m afraid people will think this is the gospel and that it is unfair.”
The comments section of Prince Charles and Camilla’s official Twitter account has been closed after the royal couple received hateful comments following the final season of ‘The Crown’.
The show’s creator, Peter Morgan, called the series an “act of the creative imagination.”
